Web design is the process of designing websites - a compilation of content including text and applications that reside on a web server/servers.
Who is Web designer?
A Web designer is a person who creates the visual elements (images, banners, text, etc) that make up a user interface page; he is the one who decides the layout, colour schemes.
A web designer has to work on few programming languages (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, Flash action Script) and designing software’s (Photoshop, Illustrator) to create websites, he is responsible for the visual look of a page. Generally, in bigger organisations a web designer has to only work on the design pages for the website. In smaller operations they may be responsible for the designing and developing whole website.
Career Prospects
Web designing has become an important and very significant part of IT industry. Today, it is a very promising and lucrative career option. In todays competitive market every other small or big organizations are using the power of internet. Sectors like banking, finance, transportation, hospitality etc. are using web services at large scale. Career in web designing can be the right option for those having a good knowledge of programming languages and a flair for creativity.
Most of the Web designers are salaried employees with advertising, marketing, or design agencies, or at Web consulting firms, which build and manage websites for clients, but there are a large number of freelance Web designers too in the market.

Now, many leading software companies in India have started hiring web designers and developers in large numbers for their in-house projects as well as clients’ websites.
Skills required for Career in Web Designing
The Web is growing so fast that university programs or degree programs may be too cumbersome for potential Web designers. If you are looking to get into the field as quickly as possible, then consider taking some specialized courses (4 - 12 months) in web designing from private web designing institutes or schools that are providing professional training.
At a minimum, Web designers need to be familiar with HTML, Dreamweaver, and knowledge of JavaScript. And one should also be competent with industry standard design software such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
Lastly remember one important thing, a career in Web design means that you never stop preparing. Every other day new technology, new products, new standards, will emerge, and the only real requisite that is get ready with the latest design tools and concepts available.
